As communities around the nation prepare to honor the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Owatonna Human Rights Commission is no exception. With a special event scheduled for January 15, 2024, the commission is set to carry forward the messages of equality and inclusion that constitute the cornerstone of Dr. King's life work.

The event, held at the Steele County History Center, will commence at 11:30 a.m. and promises to be a stirring tribute to one of history's most influential civil rights leaders. Headlining the occasion is Seema Pothini of Humanize My Hoodie, who will present a narrative aligned with Dr. King's vision - encouraging individuals to confront injustice and strive to humanize each other beyond racial, socioeconomic, linguistic, and other identifiers.

The poignant resonance of Dr. King’s dream of a more just and equitable society is as relevant today as it was over half a century ago. As citizens, we are reminded to reflect on our shared humanity and the actions we can take to cultivate an inclusive community. On this day, Owatonna residents are invited not just to remember the man, but to actively engage with his ideals and the aspirations he had for all humankind.

Do mark your calendars and join your neighbors in this reflective and enriching experience, designed to stir the mind and spirit towards a more empathetic and united society.
