As the fall season continues, it's essential to keep our local water resources clean and safe for the community to enjoy. The City of Owatonna's Stormwater Management Program, Clean H2Owatonna, focuses on reducing pollution in streams, rivers, and waterways. The program aims to address stormwater pollution caused by phosphorus and other contaminants in urban areas.

In these areas, stormwater from streets, sidewalks, and parking lots does not pass through the Wastewater Treatment Plant, unlike household wastewater. Instead, stormwater flows directly into rivers and creeks, carrying pollutants with it. By addressing stormwater pollution, the Clean H2Owatonna program helps preserve the quality of our local water resources.

To support Clean H2Owatonna and promote clean water, here are some useful fall clean water tips:

  1. Adopt a storm water drain near your home. You can also volunteer and receive a complimentary rake to keep the drain free of leaves and debris. To obtain a Storm Drain Marking Kit, email stormwater@owatonna.gov.
  2. Sweep up grass clippings, leaves, and other debris from driveways, sidewalks, and the street.
  3. Keep gutters clear of leaves and other debris.
  4. If fertilizer lands on hard surfaces during application, be sure to clean it up so it doesn't run off with the rain.
  5. Dispose of pet waste properly, even as the weather turns cold.
  6. During routine preparations for cold weather, check vehicles and outdoor equipment for leaks.

By following these steps, Owatonna residents can actively support the Clean H2Owatonna program and help maintain clean water resources for future generations. Stormwater management in urban areas is an essential process to protect the environment, promote clean waterways, and ultimately improve the quality of life for the community.
