Lake Kohlmier beach has officially reopened its doors to eager swimmers and sunbathers following a summer closure due to flooding. The beach, located in a serene natural setting, offers a perfect spot for relaxation and recreation every day. The city has taken significant measures to ensure that the beach remains a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.

Key to the safety measures is the regular water testing conducted by the City of Owatonna. Although not required by the Minnesota Department of Health, city staff test the water weekly for E. Coli levels through UC Laboratory. This extra precaution confirms that Lake Kohlmier's water quality consistently meets the Minnesota Beach Monitoring Program standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Beachgoers will notice ropes marking the designated swimming areas, though it's important to note that there are no lifeguards on duty. Visitors must adhere to the posted beach rules and swim at their own risk. For those looking to adventure beyond the shore, canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards are available to rent for just $6.50 from Thursday to Sunday each week.

The city's commitment to safety and maintenance extends beyond water testing. Every swimming season, the city treats the lake for swimmer’s itch based on Department of Natural Resources guidelines. Additionally, the city manages lake weeds under an annual DNR permit and ensures the beach area is raked daily, creating a pleasant environment for visitors.

For community members who prefer a swimming experience outside of natural bodies of water, River Springs Water Park at 3065 St. Paul Road serves as an inviting alternative. Open daily through August 18, the water park features monitored swimming areas and a variety of amenities ensuring a fun, safe family outing.

Lake Kohlmier and River Springs Water Park each offer unique experiences for summer fun. Whether enjoying the natural beauty of a local lake or the convenience and safety of a water park, Owatonna provides ample options for a refreshing and enjoyable day out.
